The Awatere Valley is traditional sheep-farming country,
stretching from the foothills of Mount Tapue-o-Uenuku to the Pacific Coast. These days,
olive groves and vineyards share the landscape.
Located south of Blenheim
and reached from SH1 or the scenic Redwood Pass Rd, the Awatere Valley has a summer-only
inland route, following the Awatere River into the inland Kaikoura Range. It passes
through New Zealand's largest sheep station, Molesworth Station, and ends at the alpine
resort, Hanmer Springs.
