Havelock, gateway to the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds, is a seaside
resort 20 minutes' drive from Blenheim and just over
one hour from Nelson.
Steeped in both Maori and European history, Havelock's waters were first crossed by Maori
waka (canoes) 1000 years ago. In the 1770s, explorer Captain James Cook arrived.
These days, fishing boats, water taxis and charter boats moor at the Havelock Marina,
close to Main Street's boutique art galleries, colonial buildings and cafes where
greenshell mussels are a cuisine specialty. The shellfish are harvested from farms in the
sounds' clear waterways, but ample recreational space remains for divers, kayakers and
anglers.
